Nottinghamshire Area Prescribing Committee (APC)
The Area Prescribing Committee (APC) is a group of representative prescribers, providers, and funders of medicines in the Nottinghamshire area. Members representation includes General Practice clinicians, local hospital Trusts, Integrated Care Board (ICB), Primary Care Network (PCN) pharmacists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) and Non-Medical Prescribers (NMP). Additionally, we strive to ensure that our local patient population's voice is heard, and we pride ourselves in having active patient representatives as a key element of the membership. The names of the committee members can be found in the annual reports within the appendix 1 available under the publications section of the APC website.
The APC meets monthly to make decisions about which medicines (including tablets/capsules, injections, creams, drops, nutritional products, wound care, and medical devices) are recommended for prescribing in Nottinghamshire and whether a hospital specialist, General Practitioner (GP) or an NMP is best placed to do the prescribing. Our work is directed by National Guidance such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The APC approves local guidelines for medicines used in both Primary and Secondary Care. This means that it should not matter where a patient is being treated within Nottinghamshire the person overseeing their prescribed medication will be using the same guidelines and prescribing the same medicines. Most areas have an equivalent to our APC and working with neighbouring APCs helps to ensure that there is equity and consistency for patients. The work program and future meeting dates can be found here.
